Our Roots

Brian was extremely close with his maternal grandfather, Bill, a 20-year veteran of the United States Navy who was his best friend growing up and, in many ways, taught him what relational joy really was. Unfortunately, by the time Brian’s first son was born, Bill had begun significant physical and cognitive decline. Very early in Brian’s son’s life, Bill had lost almost all recognition of who Brian was, or even what was going on around him. Brian recalls taking his grandfather home to an assisted living community on Christmas Eve when reality pierced his heart.

“I remember taking him home on Christmas Eve and realizing I had already lost him, even though he was still alive,” he recalls. “I went to my car and cried after I said goodbye. It was sad to lose the last couple of years he had that overlapped with my oldest son.”

Brian has lost three grandparents to dementia, including Bill. Brian himself carries the APOE4 gene, which makes him 14 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s in his life. Naturally, this engendered in Brian a passion to do all he can from a preventative standpoint to make sure he stays sharp -- for his children today, and his grandchildren tomorrow.
